We are cycling for 14 days,
Hundreds of miles, we put ourselves through paaaain,
Through paaaaain
Going up and down the Alps,
In our lowest gear,
Our legs are cramping up,
Tooo muchhhh
She said we've gotta pedal on for 14 days,
It doesn't make a difference if we're A or B team,
We've got each other, one big peloton,
We sandbag a lot!!
Woaaaah we're halfway there,
Woaaaah cycling Rome to Home,
My arse hurts, it's chafing a lot
Woaaaah all for Stevie B!
100 miles plus per day,
The physios get their hands,
And make us hurt a lot,
A lotttt
Lots of gels, fluids and cakes,
It's the sortve stuff,
That gets us through the day,
Horaaay,
She said we gotta dig deep, when we are hurt
We will hit the wall, and then we'll get pulled up
We've got each other, we are one big team,
It's for Stevie B!!
Woaaaah we're halfway there,
Woaaaah cycling Rome to Home,
My arse hurts, it's chafing a lot,
That's my song for the day to celebrate us making us to the halfway point!! Hope you enjoy it!! Day 7, and we were covering 109 miles from Aix en Provence up north to Les Tourrettes (I shall not swear on here, bit you can imagine the jokes going around today). The day was a journey from the Rhone Valley and this was the flattest day yet! If only that meant it was easy...
Headwind in cycling is the worst word one can hear, alongside mountain ahead (2 words) and closely followed by puncture and sandbagger. Today, we received a lovely headwind (this is when the wind is blowing into you), and by lovely I mean horrendous, and by horrendous I mean extremely disturbing and by extre...well you get the message! About 70 miles of this stage was into this headwind, and it caused the pace of cycling to feel like walking pace, as well as doing a good job to hold onto our bikes!!
During these headwinds, Benson managed to pick up 2 punctures in 30 minutes, not good!! So as we passed him as he sat on the side of the road fixing his tyre with James and Dave, we soon entered the lovely town of Chateneuf de Pape. For you winos out there, you'll know the name...renowned for its very good and expensive wine, we ventured there for lunch, enjoying some of their finest meats, and a few enjoying a glass of the Pape. I didn't however, as I don't drink........
To add to the puncture list, my dad supposedly picked up 2 punctures (probably just his excuse for being slow), and dean also picked up a puncture. I don't want to curse it for me, so I shall not say anymore!
After lunch, we stuck to the long monotonous road fighting the headwinds that got to speeds of 30mph for the majority. When the wind occasionally chilled out, we tried our best to sprint forward to make up some yards before the next gust came along! When we arrived in the town prior to Les Tourrettes, most the group decided that McDonald's would be a perfect treat for our windswept bodies and minds, and so we did! I know you're all desperate to know what I had, so my meal was 6 chicken nuggets in which I actually got 7!! Plus a milkshake which I have craved all week and some fries followed by a lotus caramel biscuit mcflurry which was amazing!!
After we stuffed our faces, we made the last surge down to Les Tourrettes with a lovely view of a power plant and train line to one side and the motorway on the other. By the time most arrived back at the hotel it was gone 7.30pm so another 12+ hour day out on the road. Most quickly grabbed a massage and went to bed, so I expect a few tired bodies and minds will be about tonight!!
And so, onto day 8 and the shorter (fingers crossed) 85 mile journey to Lyon! I personally can start to feel like we are progressing now as we head north through France! And seeing the fundraising total keep going up is another huge motivator for us all. We are all watching it each day (obviously not when cycling cause that'd be stupid) and it really does give us a boost when we see it shoot up! So if you're reading this and would like to help us push through these next 7 days or know somebody who'd like to sponsor then go to Rome2Home.co.uk
Early night for me and my Roomie Matt tonight. He's just finished catching up on Eastenders (don't ask) and as I finish this blog we have got our cups of water by our beds, and porridge waiting for us in the morning and hopefully some dry clothes too!!
Day 8, here we come!!
